NEWSMAKERS, just like the rest of us, need downtime. They need to get away from the spotlight and take moments for themselves, whether it is to case stress, increase their energy level, spend time with family and friends, or just spend some quiet time alone.

Some meditate or practice yoga. Others, such as National Medical Association President Dr. Lucille C. Norville Perez, work out at the local gym or on machines in their personal home fitness center. Master P, like so many other music moguls and superstars, has installed a full gym at his new Beverly Hills home.

Many newsmakers take a hike or walk to relieve stress. David Satcher, former U.S. surgeon general and current director of the National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine, takes his gym shoes with him wherever he goes so that he can run when he has time. Others in the spotlight choose to spend time preparing meals, playing or reading with their loved ones and family members.

Attorney Willie Gary listens to music and shoots pool in the rec room of his Florida mansion. Gary has special sound systems in his home and two jet planes to play primarily gospel music. "I've got to have my music," Gary told EBONY.

These top newsmakers have earned the right to take a break from life's hectic pace. With their busy schedules and the adverse effects those schedules could have on their minds and bodies, they--like the rest of us--want to make sure that they can achieve a healthy balance between work and play.

hmmmm. none that i can think of. i have no missing limbs, i have all my fingers. if you count astigmatism, then yes, i have a congenital defect.

it's a wash. i have a corrosive influence on the hardworking, the quiet, and the uptight. i have an uplifting effect on the bored, the restless, and the curious.

the los angeles lakers. i root for the home team.

my naturalized american status. because i speak in a normal southern california accent (not to be confused with valley girl) and because my fashion sense is up to date, people of all races and ethnicities assume that i am a native born american. i am proud to be naturalized, because it indicates choice and action on my part. my american citizenship wasn't handed to me, so i can really appreciate it. many nativists start mouthing off about those "damn illegal immigrants" in front of me, assuming that i would agree with them. just because i look assimilated doesn't mean that i think like a nativist.

usa and china, the summer olympic powerhouses.

8. what is your favorite flower(s)?

marijuana, yellow lilies, tulips, passionflowers, orchids, lotuses

9. can you speak another language fluently?

yes. my regret is that i can't speak chinese and italian.

10. what is it that people assume about you to be true, but isn't?

that i have money. my family has money, but i don't. yet for some reason, i tend to be treated better than some of my more moneyed family members. many people also assume that i went to a swanky private university, which is so far off the mark. my parents are anti-tax republicans who sent me to a fine public school and a backwater cal state university. believe it or not, not all cal state students are bland middle manager wannabes.

because using the shift key is a bitch. plus, microsoft word has spoiled me. no, my shift key is not broken.

13. do you think porn is bad for society?

no, but it's not good for it either. porn is just an expression of society's sexual hang ups and insecurities about shifting gender roles. it's very telling that orifice stretching pornography depicting extreme female submission is becoming popular at a time when the sexual civil rights of women are under extreme attack and abstinence education is back in vogue again. the big problem to day is that too many people equate being pro-porn with being anti-woman. and on top of that, too many people assume that submission is the only avenue for female sexuality--so whenever they see a woman being openly sexual, they think that she must be offering herself up to any man who will have her. it doesn't help that the porn industry takes advantage of too many of its "talent" by monopolozing content ownership and underpaying or misleading talent like the suicide girls site and the girls gone wild franchise. bad enough that society treats porn talent like shit--porn companies take it another step by taking away all creative ownership rights and re-selling the images in compilations for perpetuity without paying any residuals to the actors. if the porn industry wants more respect, these parisitic business practices need to stop. catering to society's worst instincts should be left to republican politicians, not pornographers. but hey, what pornographer is gonna listen to me?

What else can you do to stop the Southern California All-Stars? For the third time in the AAU season, the answer is nothing. The boys from the West Coast came to North Carolina for the Tournament of Champions and dominated the field to claim back-to-back championships. [...] From start to finish, there hasn't been a better player at the TOC than Brandon Jennings. The sophomore point guard dazzled the crowd in the championship game with his athleticism, passing skills and overall feel for the game. He glues the talent all together like few point guards, regardless of class, can. Jennings finished with 16 points in the title game. He makes the difficult shots look elementary. There isn't a point guard with the kind of athleticism that he brings to the table. The beneficiary of so many great Jennings passes was Kevin Love, the official tournament MVP. Love scored the high percentage buckets because Jennings put him into position to get the easy scores.Love has been one of the most dominant players on the AAU circuit this spring. He has the championship trophies to prove it. There are few players that can say they have back-to-back championships at the Kingwood Classic and the Tournament of Champions. Love can. Love, an AAU teammate of Duke commitment Taylor King and Class of 2008 phenom Brandon Jennings, has narrowed his list of colleges to North Carolina and UCLA. "It's still going to take a while, but this definitely influences my decision," he said, surrounded by a pack of reporters after walking off the court following his team's victory. Greg Hicks' quick hitters from the West: The first annual Arizona Cactus Classic was held last weekend at the University of Arizona and there was plenty of talent on hand. The MVP of the tournament was James Harden, a 6-5 junior shooting guard from Artesia High in Lakewood, Calif. Harden has a very well-rounded game and he does just about everything well. He should have a great shot at making the McDonald's All-American game next year. Harden's list of schools consists of Arizona State, UCLA, Arizona, Washington and Texas. Fox Sports 5/27

One day after an NCAA announcement that hampered first-year Indiana University basketball coach Kelvin Sampson from recruiting for the next calendar year, Sampson landed Phil Jones, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound center from Laurinburg Academy in North Carolina. Jones, ranked 106th in the Rivals.com top 150 prep players in the country, confirmed that he mailed his formal scholarship agreement to IU Friday, according to the Indianapolis Star. The Class of 2007 has been called the "Year of the Guard" and the Memorial Day Classic will offer a great example of why. After a 2005-06 season in which Arizona had some significant problems shooting the ball, the UA coaches are trying to make sure the problem isn't repeated in the future. Kevin Love, PF, Lake Oswego (Ore.) High School. Enthusiasm for Love is growing as he improves his body. He was thick and earthbound at the Reebok ABCD Camp last summer -- partly because of a knee problem -- but still showed off amazing skills in the low post. One analyst, Scout.com's Jeff Goodman, went so far as to suggest that Love's return to health and improved conditioning had allowed him to pass Mayo as a prospect. Recruit Luke Babbitt liked what he saw, and that's one of the benefits for UA in hosting some of the nation's top high school basketball players at the Arizona Cactus Classic. Last weekend's inaugural tourney, involving about 350 players, gave stars such as Babbitt of Reno, Nev., the chance to see McKale Center and get a feel for the city. "The weather was great and so was the campus," said Babbitt, a 6-foot-7 forward from Reno's Galena High. Babbitt, a left-handed shooter who has a busy summer AAU schedule ahead, called the tourney here "a good trip." It would have been a better trip had his team - the Las Vegas Prospects - made the championship game, but it fell in the semifinals. Other schools after Babbitt include Texas, Syracuse, Duke, UCLA and Washington. Arizona "is up there," he said. "But I haven't narrowed it down. I don't want to make a time when I'll decide. NBA Hopefuls Face July Challenges

Their fates were dramatically different on NBA draft night, and their wallets also offer a significant contrast, but all 2006 ACC draft picks and free agents now have at least one thing in common: College is behind them, they must prove themselves all over again, and the heavy lifting resumes in July.

At least 12 players from 2005-06 ACC rosters -- including first-round draft picks, second-round selections and longshot free agents -- will play this month in various NBA-sanctioned summer leagues. What's at stake? That depends on the player.

The league's three first-round draft picks, Duke forward Shelden Williams, Duke guard J.J. Redick and N.C. State forward Cedric Simmons, earned two-year guaranteed contracts via their draft slots. Their summer-league appearances are designed to give them a jump on the 2006-07 season rather than to force them to battle for a roster spot. After all, they'll get paid a lot of money over the next two seasons, whether or not they make the team, which they almost certainly will because of the money invested in them.

The conference's four second-round selections, Boston College forward Craig Smith, North Carolina swingman David Noel, Florida State forward Alexander Johnson and Miami guard Guillermo Diaz, face less predictable futures. Second-round picks don't get guaranteed contracts unless they negotiate for them, which doesn't happen often, and those who make the team often earn the NBA minimum salary ($412,000 next season). A record number of second-rounders stuck with their NBA teams last year, in part because of the league's expansion to a 15-man roster and the presence of the NBDL.

The ACC's free agents (see below) typically face a long, difficult road that could toss them into a ditch at any time. Even in the best-case scenario, a player must impress in one or two of the NBA-sponsored summer leagues (see below) just to get an invitation to a team's 2006 training camp this fall. At that point, he still faces the challenge of winning a 2006-07 roster spot, often while going head-to-head against players who have guaranteed deals, before he can qualify for the NBA minimum salary. All the while, he needs to play well enough to impress any international scouts who may be watching, just in case.

The Vegas Summer League will take place from July 6-14 in Las Vegas. It will feature teams from the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Hornets, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards.

The Southern California Summer Pro League will take place from July 8-19 in Long Beach, Calif. It will feature teams from the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards.

The Pepsi Pro Summer League will take place from July 10-14 in Orlando. It will feature teams from the Charlotte Bobcats, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets and Orlando Magic.

The Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue summer league will take place from July 14-21 in Salt Lake City. It will feature teams from the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, Seattle Sonics and Utah Jazz.

During such times, near-court seats at an important Laker game are a desirable place for entertainment figures to "be seen". Each network broadcast, and many local broadcasts, of Laker home games invariably includes a few moments taken out to show on camera the various celebrities present at that particular game, and clearly many attendees are more interested in this aspect of their attendance than in the team or the game itself.

The Lakers began in 1947 when Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen bought the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League for $15,000 and relocated it to Minneapolis. As the Gems had by far the worst record in the NBL, the Lakers had the first pick in the 1947 Profesisonal Basketball League of America dispersal draft, which they used to select George Mikan, later to become the greatest center of his time. With Mikan, new coach John Kundla and an infusion of former University of Minnesota players, the Lakers won the NBL championship in their first season.
